Cyndi Lauper
‘Girls just want to have FUNdamental rights,’ was a major theme for this shoot. Cyndi Lauper’s album “She’s so unusual” felt like the perfect way to make a statement with the current dehumanization of women in the US. Originally shot by the prolific photographer Anne Leibovitz in 1983. The entire shoot was captured at Coney Island.
Cyndi wore a vintage prom dress from a store she worked at. I felt I would follow this trend, but instead I wanted to pay homage to Cyndi’s era in the 80s with a corset and tutu for my vintage look. I also upcycled a bright pink romper by turning it into a jacket. Then designed and custom embroidered the back with the phrase “ GIRLS just wanna have FUNdamental rights.” Cyndi’s vision for her shoot was to represent the power and strength of women. She included chains around her waist to represent the oppression of women and the weight that they carry. My take was to emphasize Cyndi’s vision while taking ownership of the sexuality in the shoot. A women’s body is hers and hers alone in whatever form she choses to showcase it.
We chose the famous Opera Alley in downtown Tacoma for the location for its historical and colorful look.
I had my husband stand in to capture these images under my direction. He is as always an amazing support.
