Dolly Parton’s
Heartbreaker
This project was so fun. Dolly Parton’s Heartbreaker album was released in 1978. Artwork and photography was created by Ed Caraeff.
I actually had a challenging time finding any information on the creative direction of the cover for this shoot. However, I did stumble onto an archive of the original images from the photographer’s website.. Which honestly, gave me a lot of insights and inspiration. There was an entire series of photos with red flowers covering the ground against a plain white wall that didn’t make it on the cover.
Dolly had recently been in a Playboy issue prior to the shoot so they wanted to appeal to her sensual and romantic side. I personally felt they drew inspiration from Marilyn Monroe.
In my interpretation, I created a dreamlike landscape. I imagined myself falling asleep and awakening into a colorful and romantic daze. A world of self love and celebration for individualism. Two themes Dolly holds true in her career. She paved the way for many women to express themselves authentically and in whatever way they wanted. I absolutely love that.
Overall, this may have been my favorite cover so far. I leveled up in my lighting skills and nailing the shots on camera. I also played with the stroboscopic technique using flash that I was not so familiar with.
