John Lennon’s
Rock’N Roll
This month’s cover was John Lennon’s Rock’N Roll album recorded in 1975. The cover photograph was taken by Jürgen Vollmer during the Beatles' stay in Hamburg. It was to be Lennon's last solo album before taking a halt in his music career to focus on family. For this portrait, John Lennon stands confidently in a doorway while three figures walk by captured with motion blur. The figures are George Harrison, Stu Sutcliffe and Paul McCartney.
This recreation was a blast because it required Gavin and I to explore Tacoma a bit. It was important to me to find an older building with the brick and the arched doors. So when we stumbled onto this vintage storage building sign we knew we had found the perfect location.
I wanted the cover to feel authentic from my perspective so I zoomed the shot out to include more of the Tacoma sign and historic building. It gave the image the Tacoma grit city soul we so adore. I played with the motion blur of the original cover. John Lennon is in focus with some of his band mates in blur. I took away that his jump to doing solo albums didn’t mean he was alone and without his mates. So I created the effect of Gavin and I merging and separating. Symbolizing the strength of our bond is enhanced when we focus on our independence and self love.
Annnnnnnd you know I had to add some flare with a sequin skirt. I don’t really need an excuse to wear something sparkly. Hope you enjoy :o)
